What inspires you to write romance books?
Human interaction is complex, fascinating, and often doesn’t seem to make sense. Romance and sexual interplay are the most intense of all human interactions.
Tell us about how you write:
I used to write beginning with a character and situation. After hitting too many dead ends, I now develop a story structure to give me a sense of what will be happening. I use Scrivner to write drafts because sometimes I write out of sequence.
Despite plotting more, the characters are free to take matters into their own hands. I seldom use character sketches because I tend to see the characters from the inside, rather than the outside.
Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Just the ones who make some sense. Usually that means that I don’t listen to the nicer ones much.
What advice would you give other writers?
Don’t force situations. Let them play out. If there isn’t enough drama in an interaction to suit you, either examine it from another angle or pump it up in rewriting when you know the characters even better.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I publish my own stories, but also work with good publishers, especially in the context of anthologies. Sometimes it is fun to have someone else set the topic and word count, and some general parameters and see what happens. This approach has gotten me to write paranormal and steampunk stories that I might not have attempted otherwise. I’m also branching into audio books, which seems to be a growing market.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Just that it continues to change. Authors have to pay attention as the vendors find new ways to satisfy readers.
What genres do you write:: paranormal erotic romance, western (historical) erotic romance, contemporary erotica, whatever comes to mind
