Kate Ashenden is a copywriter, public relations professional, and author of the new book 'Wanted in Paradise'.

Romance novels are enjoyable to write because there are so many exciting ways to convey the rollercoaster of love.

Also, the protagonist is often an ordinary person, facing daily challenges or recovering from a traumatic event, so for that individual to have a wonderful happily ever after is inspiring and uplifting.

I start in a very structured way, so I outline my plot in as much detail as possible and get a clear idea of what I need to write for each chapter. Then I write a summary of my characters to make them become real to me. The next step is to explore creative ways of portraying different moments in the story.

I think about them a lot. They're in my head even when I'm not writing, so while I'm crafting the book they become real to me.

Write what you would like to read not what you think you should write.

I wanted to try independent publishing, just to see if I was up to the challenge! Only time will tell.

Many best selling authors have gone from indie publishing to a contract with a traditional publisher, so maybe we'll see more of that. It makes sense – if a book is doing well, great reviews etc, then surely that is a safer bet than a manuscript which hasn't been tested on the market.
