Renee Conoulty is an Australian Air Force wife and mother of two. She writes stories of dance, romance and military life including Don’t Mean a Thing, Catching Onix, Wife, Mother, Woman, and Best Friends for Now.

I have an optimistic view on life so I enjoy writing stories with happy endings. Romance always had a happy ending so I find myself drawn to that genre.

I write in regular short bursts. I can't sit down and write for hours on end so I focus on writing smaller amounts on a daily basis. I focus best on one project at a time.

I don't "hear" my characters. When I'm writing, I think about what I would do next in the current situation then compare the character to me and figure out what they would do next.

The romance writing network is very supportive so I'd suggest making friends with other romance writers. You can join RWA or find a similar network online. It's great to surround yourself with people who you understand you and can help build you up when you're feeling down.

I chose a small publisher for my debut novel as they were able to do all the things I didn't know how to. They were more flexible around publication dates so I could have a book launch party in the town where the book was set before my family and I had to move away.

I think indie publishing and the audiobook market will continue to grow.
