About the Author

Award-winning author Amelia Judd writes fun and flirty contemporary romance. She loves to entertain her readers with memorable characters and fast-paced plots that blend humor, heart, and heat.

After receiving a degree in international affairs, Amelia lived and studied in Belgium for over three years. During her time in Europe, she traveled extensively, earned a master’s degree, and fell in love with writing contemporary romance.

Amelia now lives in the Midwest with her sports-loving husband, two active kids, and a lovable dog that insists on staying by her side day and night. When she isn’t writing, she’s spending time with family, hanging out with friends, chauffeuring her kiddos around town, or planning her family’s next getaway.

What inspires you to write romance books?

I’ve always been interested in why certain people are attracted to each other (beyond physical appeal) and why they fall in love. It’s a fascinating topic to consider… Writing romance allows me to explore this subject from a different angle with each book I write.

Tell us about how you write:

I assumed I would be a plotter when I began writing. And in some ways, I am. I begin each book with an outline of a plot including all major conflicts and turning points. But my characters don’t always follow their script and occasionally take the story in a way I hadn’t envisioned. So I’ve learned to be flexible and not put too much time into developing a detailed, rigid plot before I start.

For software, I use Scrivener and love it! As for character sketches, I always complete them before I start writing since my plots are character-driven.

Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?

I’ve never had a conversation with my characters, but they do seem to write their own dialogue. Now that I think about it, that’s probably why I like dialogue so much… it feels like someone else is doing the work!

What advice would you give other writers?

Don't give up. Writing takes a ton of hard work, dedication, and self-motivation. It can be frustrating, and it can really suck at times. But every now and then, you’ll have a good day. You’ll write a scene, a paragraph, or even just a line that squeezes your heart and lifts your spirits enough to keep you going to the end. And when you finally hold a copy of your book in your hand, all the crap it put you through fades away and you realize… it really was worth it.

How did you decide how to publish your books?

After attending the 2015 RWA conference and hearing the wonderful success authors were having with self-publishing, I knew that it was the right path for me. I love the control it gives me over every aspect of my work. It would drive me crazy to have someone change my title or pick my cover for me. Of course, self-publishing has turned out to be roughly a thousand times more work than I anticipated so I fully understand why other—less control-freak—authors choose to publish with a publisher.

What do you think about the future of book publishing?

In the future, I believe most authors will choose to work with small, flexible publishers who handle the majority of the tasks but still allow the authors some say in the process.

What genres do you write?

Contemporary Romance, Romantic Comedy

What formats are your books in?

Both eBook and Print
