What inspires you to write romance books?<\/b>
\nI adore writing about love, and whole the sensuous experience. I started writing when I had very little freedom of expression in my job, and needed a creative outlet.<\/p>\n
Tell us about how you write:<\/b>
\nI make a loose outline and then write my pants off.
\nI also first draft by hand, which means that before anyone sees it, I’ve had at least one round of edits.
\nScrivener is awesome, and I’m a post-it note addict.<\/p>\n
Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?<\/b>
\nI try to live inside their heads to get a feel for how they would act. Environment plays a key role in my books, so I try to understand which of the five senses would impact them the most.<\/p>\n
What advice would you give other writers?<\/b>
\nLet your first draft be a mess. Write it down without looking back, like a gesture drawing, a first rehearsal stumble-through. This is the raw creative brain-stuff of inspiration, and shouldn’t be stifled with concerns about grammar and continuity.
\nWhen it’s finished, then go back and edit with the complete story known, whick will give you the ability to see themes and a deeper character arc.<\/p>\n
How did you decide how to publish your books?<\/b>
\nI really enjoyed self-pubbing, but to do it successfully, you have to have help: cover designers, editors, format experts.<\/p>\n
I was discovered by both my agent and my acquisitions editor through the #pitmad event on Twitter. These kinds of pitch flurries are an excellent opportunity for writers to get their query into the hands of those looking for a specific genre.<\/p>\n
What do you think about the future of book publishing?<\/b>
\nI love that the internet has revolutionized the way people, especially women, read. Access to books–especially women driven genres like romance and erotica–has become so much easier.
\nPublishing is an ever-changing business, but it’s exciting to see the bigger publishing houses embrace ebooks by opening up digital imprints like Carina and Entangled.<\/p>\n
