Chapter 1- College
At Los Angeles Creek College, Los Angeles, CA, 5 students (Peter: the outcast stoner, Brandon: An optimistic nerd that is dating one of the most beautiful girls on campus, Elizabeth (Lizzy): a careless girl with not much of brains, Ashley: a natural born leader that sets her goals first, John: the jock, hard headed and always wants his way.) take on an assignment that they will never forget.
“Many heard stories of ghosts and demons but what about anyone seeing the Reaper?” says Peter. “That won’t ever work with this project, I have a lot going on for this credit.” Ashley says with a tone. “He does have a point, we are all stuck in this together. I remember seeing an article online that said something about a mysterious house in Texas, were some kids went there and just disappeared along with the house and numerous reports of something they’ve never seen before.” John interrupts.
Ashley argues with John, “So you’re telling me that the supposed Reaper was there?” Lizzy walks into the house and heard a little of it and starts laughing hysterically at what she just heard. “You know that’s just a bunch of bullshit, why don’t we choose something more realistic that we can all use?”
Everyone agreed but Peter and John.
“I say the vote is 2 on 2, why don’t we see Brandon and see what he thinks.” Says John.
Now Brandon doesn’t care about the project, his family is rich, he can live off computers but was forced to go to college by his parents. A ring goes off at Brandon’s doorbell. John and Peter are there along with Lizzy and Ashley. “Hey Bro, answer your door!” Peter yells, Brandon’s father answered the door. “What do you want?!?” he says rudely. “Umm we came to see Brandon, is he home?” “Let me go check…”
“Brandon! Your friends are here.” Says the father
“I’m coming dad!” Brandon yelling from the basement. He rushes upstairs and goes to the door.
“What’s up you guys?”
Peter answers, “We got a question for you, may we come in man?”
“Sure but that doesn’t explain why you guys are here.”
John replies, “We have a project due by the end of the summer, we need your opinion on where we should go and do our report on. Peter came up with this idea of doing something on the reaper, what do you think of that? All the girls are out cause they think it’s a dumb idea but this could give us the A we need.”
“I don’t even know where to begin the research though, how about we gather our facts from online, if it seems legit, we should really do it.” Brandon replies.
“ Then that’s settled. Lizzy, Ashley? How about we do some research on this and change our thoughts about this report?”
“Okay…” Lizzy grunts. “ Why do men always make the choices?”
Ashley replied, “ Cause men don’t have brains…”

Invasion of Privacy and Other Short Stories by Jim Liston

    Invasion of Privacy

If you’re the person who murdered my wife and think you’ve gotten away with it, think again. I’m looking for you, and I’ll eventually find you.

Is it wrong for me to try and find the person who ruined my life, even at the expense of stealing a few moments of someone’s privacy? If I invade a person’s privacy without them knowing it, what’s the harm? I guess it all comes down to the question of whether I’m willing to risk the consequence of going to jail if I’m caught. I am. What do I have to lose?

    The other stories included are:

    The Tourist Attraction

I’m sick of it. Every day there’s a group of them tourists, standing by my fence watching us, pointing and whispering. I don’t know what started it, but I’ll be damned if I’m gonna put up with it much longer.

    A Novel Murder

“I’m going to kill her today,” he said, “I’ve had her tied up in the basement for three days; it’s time to end it.”

    The Doctor’s Pet Fly

A fly only lives for about a month. It seems like a waste of time to train a fly and then have it die after only a month. Maybe he’s found a way to keep them alive longer. He is a doctor, after all.

    The Show

Rita looked around at the crowd of smiling, excited faces, concentrating on every detail to commit it to memory; she didn’t want to forget any of it. She shouldn’t have worried; she would remember this for the rest of her life.

    Carl and Tabitha

Carl hated his boss and was determined to find a way to get even with him.

    Tag, You’re It!

We looked across the valley at a breathtaking scene of red lakes and forests of blue and orange that were alive with activity.

    Before They Come Back

Running his claw-like hand along my spine while making an odd whistling noise that I surmised to be their way of communicating, I began to realize they were preparing to cut me open.

    Justin’s Love

When Justin first saw Lucille, it was love at first sight. He knew that she was perfect for him. All of his friends and co-workers were envious; she was beautiful.

    Ronnie and the Smoke Bomb.

I didn’t tell Ronnie the police had found him sitting on the curb near the car, crying. They said he was sitting there mumbling, “It’s only a smoke bomb.”
