About the author:
For me, writing is the best way to explore and express everything that I love about life. I have a lot of interests – philosophy, psychology, science, art, music, and all forms of fiction – so my writing is fairly eclectic. I am as comfortable writing an essay about the dangers of logic as I am creating a fantasy world where the granddaughter of a god wreaks havoc in a small town. My best stories, I think, combine the above interests in a seamless (or perhaps unseemly) whole. My characters are my babies. I can’t seem to stop myself from loving them – even the evil ones. I’m a laissez-faire god: I create them, and then let them play, except for an occasional time-out.
What inspired you to write your book?
On a morning jog in the rural countryside, high school star athlete Tom O’Shaughnessy encounters what appears to be a young girl lying unconscious in the grass. His decision to carry her home changes his life and the lives of everyone around him. When the girl awakens, she doesn’t remember her name or how she got there, but it’s soon painfully apparent that there’s more to her than meets the eye. Incredibly strong and in possession of strange psychic and telekinetic powers, the girl poses a quandary for Tom and his mother, who struggle to choose between calling the authorities and respecting the girl’s wish to remain unreported. When she begins to remember bits and pieces of her life, her memories point to confinement in a laboratory/prison and to life in another world with people of her kind. Believing that government forces may be searching for her, Tom’s mother worries that she may prove a threat to them even as her bond with Tom grows stronger with each passing day. When the girl remembers enough – including her name, “Synthyrea” – to believe she knows the way back to her world, her attempt to leave coincides with a massive federal operation to recapture her. In a desperate flight from the authorities, Synthyrea and Tom face machine gun-toting soldiers, assault helicopters, fighter jets, a fall from an airplane, an angry mountain lion, and their own deepening attachment to each other. In the end, it is Synthyrea’s own people who pose the greatest threat to her and Tom’s decision to make a future together.
