About the author:
Elle Preston is a busy mom to a gaggle of small humans and furbabies. When she is not cleaning up messes, she can be found with her face in her ipad writing young adult paranormal romance novels (which some speculate she does as an escape from all the messes). Her debut novel, Illusions, is the first in the Ravens of Darkness series. The second book, Reflections, is set for release in November 2019. She is currently working on the third book in the series, Deceptions. Elle sets her stories on the shores of Lake Michigan where she loves to walk the beach and hike in the Indiana Dunes with her very patient husband.
Here is a short sample from the book:
"Start talking," I say pushing him against the lockers.
"Frisky today?" Talon’s wayward smile fills his face as he leans over for a kiss, but I hold him at arm's length and demand he tell me what’s going on. He hugs me for a long moment and I feel the steady cadence of his heart and the solid six pack of his torso against me. I melt into him, aware in some corner of my mind that it’s more a diversionary tactic than a loving embrace. I steer clear of the corners of my mind and the cobwebs that tend to lurk in dark places, searching instead for the patches of light.
“What’s élan, Talon?"
He takes a deep breath. "Relax. Élan is not a drug. It’s just energy. It strengthens us and makes our special gifts even more powerful.”
This makes sense. I think back to the beach party. It’s how Jake was able to go from hovering to flying, how Rhiannon could command the water with such precision, and how Talon could fall into an inferno and still be unharmed.
"Why do you always look so different when you take élan, like you’re drunk?"
"That’s what it does to me. I still get a little inebriated from too much élan. That’s all,”
he says.
I need to process all of this. Talon’s world is strange and though he says I'm part of it, I’m not sure I want to be.
He leans toward me and I take in the faint chlorine and spicy department store cologne that is Talon’s scent.
"Did I pass your test?" he wonders.
I look into his eyes deciding if I accept everything he’s told me.
"I know this is difficult for you.” He cradles my face in his strong hands. “Don’t worry, Love. I’ll help you. You can trust me.”
