“Next!” Jacob called without even looking up from the computer. “How may I help you?”
“One room and a heaping helping of your best figgy pudding,” returned the first voice he’d heard all night without a bite of anger, accusation, or panic in it.
He looked up to see who the voice belonged to and holy shit. His mind instantly filled with two very discordant thoughts trying to scream over each other. Oh great, a city-slicker who’s probably never set foot in a small town, showing up here dressed like he just lost a fight with an Armani catalogue and wearing a goddamn Santa hat no less, the bitter, mountain man part of his brain supplied. But another, insubordinate part of his brain couldn’t help but notice how his blue-green eyes seemed to twinkle, and how his full face and soft features conveyed kindness and warmth.
Jacob snapped to a few moments later when a puzzled expression from the man across from him signaled that he’d been gawking for a beat too long.
