Elvingstone by J.P. Reedman by J.P. Reedman

In an alternate world Victorian England, Arabella Lorne dances every night upon the stage, surrounded by egotistical prima donnas, dishonest theatrical agents, and sinister hangers-on,

When the ageing Diva Eulalia Fairbanks accuses Arabella of upstaging her, and her Eulalia’s ‘bully boys’ decide to make an example of the young actress, Arabella fears for her very life.

However, the saturnine, brooding Sir Alaric Stannion, an admirer who has watched Arabella’s performances from his box every night, rescues her and holds out an escape from her tumultuous life.

He offers to marry her and make her mistress of Elvingstone Manor. A marriage purely of convenience, as he needs a wife for propriety’s sake.

Barred from the theatre, Arabella accepts his unorthodox proposal and is taken by carriage to Alaric’s crumbling ancient mansion…but Elvingstone hold its secrets, and soon the past will intrude upon the present and creatures straight from myth walk in the modern world.

What dwells within the crypt within the churchyard, which Alaric paints with blood?

Whatever became of Alaric’s first wife Floralie and their little son?

What inspired you to write your book?

When I was a little girl, my family took me to Elvaston Castle in Derbyshire. The somewhat dilapidated house and gardens were both quirky and eerie to an 8 year old. The feeling did not vanish when I visited again just a few years back, and there was always a story brewing in my head. This year, it finally got expression…

    Amatore’s Restaurant by James Sillwood

    0 out of 5

It is the end of another successful year for the Recreative Theatre Company and the cast have arranged to meet at Amatore’s Restaurant for their end-of-season dinner.

As the evening progresses, each guest recalls a past sexual liaison. In these recollections we are transported to a variety of locations; the rolling countryside of Brittany to the brown cafés of Amsterdam, from the grandeur of Venice to the slums of Marseilles.

The stories describe various situations: Prudence relates her encounters on a train journey and Colin makes a surprising discovery when he settles down to watch his favourite film. Some characters are driven by self-interest: the sociopath Nicole with her reckless behaviour towards her trusting nephew, and Colette who takes advantage of her unsuspecting tenant.

A common theme unfolds: the hidden truths behind the motives for seduction. As the evening comes to a close, old alliances are re-kindled, new attachments are formed, while others are broken. Frustrations rise to the surface as truths are revealed. For some the evening is a great success, for others a disaster.
