What inspired you to write your book?
As a kid my dad was a professional musician; he played the trumpet in most of the Big Bands of the jazz-swing era. I stumbled onto a listing of his professional musical credits on an Internet search engine using his name: “charles frankhauser trumpet” as a search key. Then the memories started flooding back of a gig in Atlantic City on the Steel Pier. The character named Ruby took shape from an act that I watched many times on the Steel Pier while my parents slept during the days because musicians worked most of the nights. Mom’s parting words to me in the mornings were, “Go play but stay out of trouble.” Writing the novel was fun because when I was a young man I served in the U.S. Navy aboard a diesel electric submarine similar in many respects to the German U-Boats. A romantic thriller with touches of humor leading to a surprise ending was written to entertain readers. I hope they like reading it.
