Author Interview: Mary Farve

Nice to meet you! I’m Mary, a hospice worker living in London. I was looking to spice up my life, so I decided to try my hand at writing taboo erotica. I never thought I’d publish, but then I heard of BreakWave House, which is 100% owned and operated by minority women. It donates 10% of its proceeds to charity, and made selling sexy books seem less skeevy, and more sex positive & fun! So I’m very thankful to have been given this opportunity. Besides writing, I play football – to Americans, soccer! I’m also a big Manchester fan. When I’m not working, writing, or playing football, I’m shoe shopping. You caught me. I have a huge weakness for sparkly stilettos. Thanks so much for your interest, as a new author I sincererly appreciate it!

What inspires you to write romance books?
My fantasies! Ultimately I’m always into whatever genre of erotica I’m writing. If it doesn’t work for me, it won’t work for someone else. And if it works for someone else too, I’d like to think it’s erotica that should be written. I’m inspired to create a sex positive world for women through art.

Tell us about how you write:
While I totally fly by the seat of my pants, I have to wait to be inspired. Oftentimes, I’ll toy with a story idea or character for weeks or months, before committing him or her to the page. When I’m ready to do that, I can spend days or weeks glued to the laptop, at exclusion of all else.

Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I don’t do either. I become my characters. If I do any talking, it’s to myself – about myself. “If I were Aubrey, what would I say?” That’s a common way I write.

What advice would you give other writers?
If you’re inspired to write, write. It’s that simple. Don’t worry about what others will think. Don’t worry if what you’re writing’s utter tripe. Find people who will support and mentor you, and just write. Write it all out.

How did you decide how to publish your books?
Honestly, the idea of getting into erotic romance gave me a gross feeling at first. I didn’t want to seem skeevy. Then, I heard about BreakWave House, which is run by our fabulous Founder/CEO/EIC Kristen. It’s really her brainchild, she’s an absolute wunderkind and I give her snaps for it. What’s special about BreakWave, is that it specializes in humanist erotica. It’s 100% owned and operated by minority women, it donates 10% of its proceeds to charities that help women and girls, it’s committed to giving women personalities and voices in romantic works.

What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think ebook publishing’s reincarnated the dime store novel for the modern era. Erotica, especially, is always in demand. So I’m particularly excited for the future of erotic eBooks. I think they’re here to stay.

What genres do you write:: Erotic romance, erotica, taboo
