Author Joanne Sexton Shares Their Story

Joanne Sexton is an Australian romance writer and mother of two. She had always dreamed of writing novels and has been an avid reader most of her life. In between being a mum and writing, she runs a small bookkeeping business. She has recently become a qualified florist.

What inspires you to write romance books?
I have always loved reading romance. I love created love stories and writing about characters falling in love. I enjoy developing characters as they fall in love. I simply love writing adult fairy tales.

Tell us about how you write:
I start off with a basic outline. Characters, descriptions, basic plot idea, then I write by the seat of my pants, just starting and letting the characters and story guide me. I write as I’m inspired by a story. I may stop a story for a while, not sure how to develop it and then I will become inspired about the direction I want to go and I write it.

Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I listen to my characters. They play out stories in my head and I write them down.

What advice would you give other writers?
Stay true to your romantic side and fall in love as the characters do. Feel what they feel.

How did you decide how to publish your books?
I started on the Harper Collins peer site authonomy. Once I received a positive review from an editor I decided to submit. I was first published by Night Publishing an indie publisher. I am now with Tirgearr Publishing. I would advise writers to find a peer site and get as much feedback as possible.

What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think ebooks are going to continue to grow and grow.
