Author Interview: A. M. Kusi

About the author:
A.M. Kusi is the pen name of a husband and wife team (Ashley and Marcus Kusi, authors of Our Bucket List Adventures and Questions for Couples).

We enjoy writing romance novels that are inspired by our own experiences as an interracial/ intercultural couple, the things we see and face every day.

Our novels focus on healthy relationships that involve a partnership between a strong female heroine and the hero, are emotionally satisfying and have a happy ending.

What inspires you to write romantic fiction?
The stories just come to Ashley, and then we brainstorm together and form a great plot with a positive message.

Tell us about how you write.
First, we brainstorm the plot.

Second, we create a story map that is basically a summary of the important events in chronological order and notes about the characters.

Third, we create a chapter map, the goals for writing each chapter.

Lastly, the writing begins!

Do you listen to or talk to to your characters?
Yes. When I write, I can hear their voices, and personalities and try to capture it on the page. Of course, I know these are not real people, nor voices, but part of the creative process. – Ash

What advice would you give other romance writers?
Do your research and know who your audience will be and what they expect. The Story Grid Podcast is a great place to start.

How did you decide how to publish your books?
We self-publish non-fiction books and love it. As such choosing to self-publish our novel was a no-brainer.

What do you think about the future of book publishing?
It's very promising, especially with the growth in demand for audiobooks. In addition, self-publishing now makes it so much easier to share your stories with the world, without needing a traditional publisher.

Which romance sub-genere(s) fit your stories best?
Interracial/Intercultural

My books are available in the following formats:
