Author Ali Stetson Shares Their Story

Ali has worked most of her life in the performing arts industry in various different roles. Although she has been centre stage she prefers to work in the wings and is fascinated by what goes on behind the scenes.

Ali Stetson now lives in middle England with her family. She writes short stories, flash fiction and articles but her novels are where her true passion lies.

“I like ‘easy-reads’ and light hearted novels where you can escape to another place and forget about the everyday pressures that sometimes become overwhelming. I escape into my own world when I’m writing and it’s exciting to share that world with others.”

What inspires you to write romance books?
I am a true romantic at heart and I genuinely believe that everyone has a soulmate, maybe more than one. I like the idea that you could meet the love of your life in the most unusual situations and sometimes not even realise the important role that they will play in your future happiness. It’s not always love at first sight and often those relationships that simmer in the background waiting to take their turn end up being the most exciting ones.

I love to get lost in rom coms and chick lit which is why i love writing them. I read lots of other books in this genre and I also love to watch movies like this too. You can’t help but get inspired when you indulge in what you love!

Tell us about how you write:
I get an idea and I run with it! I will spend hours just letting ideas flow and not thinking too hard about details. I find that as I go along I get to know my characters and begin to understand how and why they react to certain situations. I usually have an idea as to where I want to start and where i want to end and i let my story develop from there. Once i have a first draft i then go back over it, a lot, adding in details and making sure the story is fluid. I also love to write at night when the world around me is calm and quiet so i can really get into my story.

Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
You have to get to know your characters and start thinking of them as real people in your life. Often there will be bits of you in certain characters and then bits of your friends and family so you begin to develop their personalities and character traits. I think that when you take the time to get to know your characters that’s when the story will flow so you have to talk to and listen to them.

What advice would you give other writers?
Go for it! Don’t over think things or try to plan in too much detail where you want to go and what you want to do, just sit down and start writing. Sometimes you will have a great idea and as you go along it turns out to be terrible and no matter how hard you try you can’t make it work. Let it go and start again. Write about what you know and what makes you happy and then writing will be a pleasure and not a chore.

How did you decide how to publish your books?
I like the control you have if you self-publish. It allows you to present your book to the world however you want to. Writing is so personal and often you are the only person who really gets what you are trying to convey so with self-publishing you can get your ideas across in your own way. I also really enjoy the process of promoting my book. I think i would miss out on so much if a publisher was doing the work for me.

What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think it’s exciting! Thanks to websites like Amazon where independent authors are given the perfect platform to sell their work the world is now their oyster. So many great writers have fallen through the cracks because they couldn’t find a publisher and now they have the opportunity to showcase their work which i think it fantastic!
