Pretty Masks by C.A.Bell

Masking a problem doesn’t fix it. No matter how long you keep it covered.

We all hide behind masks. Whether that be a forced smile to a loved one after a long day. A sympathetic frown of concern to someone that doesn’t really matter to you. Or a professional face at work after an almighty row at home. The fact is, we all do it. We do it because we want to be prettier on the outside than we truly are on the inside. We do it to hide the cracks that have formed due to life. But what about the people who are forced to wear masks? The people who are forced to hide their true colours because society says so?

Life has thrown its fair share of crap at Lois Johnston, and the one thing that has kept her sane and going for the last seven years is her husband, Nathan. But what happens when the one person that is keeping you safe from yourself leaves, taking not only your heart, but your sanity with them as well?

For the first time in a long time Lois is about to remove the mask that was forced upon her years ago. But what’s matured underneath after years of heartache and hiding is something even uglier than before. Life has twisted her into a monster, and she’s about to set it free.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I’m not 100% sure on what inspired this book. I have known a number of people who have suffered from mental health issues and I guess, after recent life events, the time was right to tackle such issues. That and my need to venture into a different sub-genre of erotica.

Targeted Audience: Romance lovers over 21

Author Bio:
Living on the east coast, I love to travel to Maine. Just far enough away to enjoy time with my wonderful family without the weight of work or competing schedules, but close enough that most of the short time to escape is not taken by travel. The beautiful scenery and abundance of woods and rocky beaches offers peace and tranquility to me and my family. I am the mother of three wonderful children and work in a law firm. Writing is something I never thought I could do, my vast work experience is more in accounting and legal work dealing with figures and asset allocation, but writing became a way to allow my mind to escape for short periods of time while my body stayed anchored to care for two dying parents and ensuring that I could still provide a warm and loving home to my children who agreed to be uprooted to help me care for their grandparents.
Writing for me was born out of the necessity for some peace and relief during a draining and guilt ridden time in my life. My three wonderful children and husband underwent the difficult ordeal of uprooting our lives to care for my parents who were each dying of cancer.
Drastically altering our lives to ensure that the wonderful people who cared for me during childhood and were giving and loving grandparents to their only grandchildren had their family living with them and caring for their daily needs during the three years of their waning lives when cancer ensured they could not take care of themselves, was both rewarding and heart wrenching. The guilt of drastically changing the lives of my children and impairing their freedom led to many a sleepless night and the birth of this series.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I am a nameless, faceless, insignificant cog in a wheel hoping that my random act of kindness will make another’s life simpler and more significant:

I am a nameless, faceless, insignificant cog in a wheel hoping to help someone whose name I do not know, face I have not seen, whose suffering I have not endured, experience light from the touch of a stranger’s friendly efforts to offer a ray of hope that brings a little assistance to their struggling life. Our family has known love, but we have also experienced pain and the need to sacrifice, but nothing like those we hope this will help. Please help us with our effort.

We have all seen the faces of children battling cancer, children starving at home or abroad, soldiers who have come home embattled for their bravery with scars that have secured our freedom, but for which we can never fully comprehend the depths of that cost. We have passed by and sometimes stopped to provide a hopeful word, some money, or a blanket to someone on the streets suffering economic hardship. All of those faces behind names we do not know are individuals who too may feel like cogs in wheels of a machine that need help to flourish and keep moving forward to something that works better than what we have now.

Not having the riches to feed the world or house the homeless, or the comprehension to discover a cure for diseases which ravage the body of those it inhabits and the souls of families who struggle each day alongside them, we are hoping to help in some small way, to make a difference by giving something to get something. In our time of need, we felt the rays of random acts of kindness by medical personnel or home care agents who aided us in our battles. We are hoping to pay the act forward with an act of our own. Yes we have given money, but our ability is not enough to meet the needs of the many, so we are hoping that ours with the little gifts of others can make a difference and touch the lives of people in need. To that end we have composed a series of books, hoping to offer a chuckle, a sigh, a moment of entertainment in exchange for the reader providing a donation to their local hospital that cares for children suffering from cancer, buying an extra can of food while at a grocery store and putting it in a bin designated for food pantries or homeless shelters, sending a donation to a charity assisting our returning soldiers who are injured, or helping us help a local school. The second installment of the book is available free in an electronic library, but is also offered for purchase so that the author can donate from the net proceeds to a local school in hopes that they will use it to provide the future generation with an education that they could not otherwise obtain. Happily we have made our first donation to a very grateful school and will be making another in May.

Help us with this effort. Download the book and donate, pass it on to a friend, every bit counts, or if you are a voice that reaches beyond the few, out to the social network, a voice that when you speak, people listen, tweet this out, post it on your social network page. Take a moment out of your life to assist this cog, who is not knowledgeable in ways of the internet, get the word out and help pay it forward and make the life of someone else more fulfilling, someone whose voice may not be lost in the herds of the masses but may boom and be heard well into the future. If you are willing to help, the book series is Secrets of Sanctuary Hospital with the following subheadings: A Hidden Enclave For Angels, Demons, And Vampires; A Journey Through Hell; Nightmare of The Dark Shadows; Mia’s Dark Encounter, and Final Confrontation (these last two are proposed titles). Five books in all, three are already on the net with Smashwords , their affiliates-Itunes, Barnes & Noble and more, and the second book only so far is on Amazon. The other two are coming out as soon as my family and I are through editing them. It is a family affair and my children go to school and I work to earn a living and provide for them, but please, help us if you can bring light to those whose lives face more challenges or difficulties than our own or your own.

Help us do a good thing for someone else. I hope this message finds you and yours healthy and fulfilled.

Thank you.

The Lailly Worm by Walter Donway

Book Description
A chance to live again, love, and fight back–if Caroline Brecher’s spirit can survive… A man who loves her, but knows the battle is not only for justice but for the woman she had been…

“Caroline Brecher is every woman–and human being–whose courage and will to live and love again are tested when the unimaginable–and unendurable–strikes out of nowhere.”

To Caroline Brecher, her weekend house in fashionable East Hampton is a symbol of success and the reward of hard work. Arriving on a perfect August afternoon, she doesn’t care that she has no social plans, no date, no visitors. But suddenly she does have visitors–terrifying visitors, and her life becomes a surreal torment, “the perfect torture of a woman…”

Will the soul-destroying ordeal ever end? Is there escape? Can what has been done to her and her very concept of herself as a woman ever be avenged? Can the love of a tough ex-Marine who conceives a passion for Caroline save her–even from herself–as their affair blazes into life in the presence of deadly danger?

“The Lailly Worm,” named after the beloved Scottish ballad, is a romantic thriller about how evil, striking in an instant out of nowhere, can crush the beautiful, the successful, the “safe”–even in the privileged seclusion of a Long Island resort town. And how fate can offer a slender chance to fight back.

The pace of this novel keeps accelerating right up to the moment innocence and evil come face-to-face.

” I would absolutely love to see this as a movie. Charlize Theron would make an awesome Caroline…. “–An Editor’s Review.

Don’t miss this second novel by Walter Donway, author of “The Price of Hannah Blake.” Donway is not only a novelist but a poet whose sensuous style ensures that stories like “The Lailly Worm” are both thrilling and sensuous to read.

REBELLION Book I: Book of Quay by Grea Alexander

reb-cover-drewsey-under-125Intrigue, deception, betrayal. What are a few knives in the back between two lovers?

Qing Dynasty, China.

Some wounds cut too deeply to ever truly heal, to ever be forgotten. For the rebel Phong Quay, The Princess Ni Soung is one of those wounds – a remnant of the most painful chapter in his life, a pawn in his never ending war with his greatest enemy, the Emperor Ni Fehn.

As the Han rebellion against the Emperor intensifies, The Princess Soung becomes caught in the middle. As bait in the Emperor’s most brazen bid to date to bring Phong Quay down, the princess may just find herself a casualty in the battle between the two men – a battle between the past and the present, between the truth and lies, between love and revenge.

Targeted Audience: Adults

Author Bio:
Q: Why should someone buy your work?

Because it’s awesome. (laugh) I also donate a portion of the profit to charity.

Q: Why the name SeaMonkey Ink?

Why not? (grin) What’s not to love? I mean it’s Ink squirting out of a Seamonkey. I mean sure no one has ever witnessed such a phenomenon but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen. (laugh)

Q: Seriously?

No. When I was in school (high school and beyond) I used to play pranks under various code names – one of which was Seamonkey. I also have always enjoyed writing and back when I started to do so, I used to write everything by hand (which requires either lead or Ink) even long after I got my first word processor and computer. After I finally started typing directly, it still took ink to print.

Hence SeaMonkey Ink.

Q: Have you ever actually owned Seamonkeys?

Actually I have and I’m pretty well convinced that there is a wanted poster with my name and likeness up somewhere in the SIA (Seamonkey Intelligence Agency) headquarters for mass genocide. (laugh) I try but I fail.

Q: Are any of your characters based on people you know/knew in real life?

Not really. Most are composites. However, I will say that more than a little of my own personality/thoughts/expressions pop up in my stories and among my characters.

For instance, in Rebellion Book I: Book of Quay, Phong Quay makes a statement that one day he is changing his name and not telling anyone what he changed it to. I’ve said that to people since I was like 5 – particularly when I get agitated at being disturbed.

So if any real life person is used as a template for some of my dialogue and character behaviors it would be myself.

Q: You write some historical novels. How accurate are they?

Accurate enough. (laugh) I always say I do just enough research to be dangerous.

I enjoy history and find some of the portraits of these figures, times and places to be fascinating. I actually do put in quite a nice chunk of time trying to make the story as historically accurate as possible though I would like to think my work is more character driven then driven by the time, places and figures that inspired it.
Q: Why don’t you include your photo?

Because I’m incredibly homely. (laugh)

Q: You don’t look homely to me.

For my personal safety. (laugh) I’m always raising someone’s hackles for some reason or another whether it’s intentional or not. I’m also very private person and I would prefer to gain readers/admirers based on my work rather than my appearance. My appearance is just a bonus. (wink)

Q: Is there anything you would like to add in closing?

Yes! Buy my books. (laugh)

By contributing to my income through a purchase, you make it possible for me to spend more time writing new novels for you to enjoy. As a portion of the profits of my sales do go to charity, you are also placing yourself 2 degrees of separation from being a philanthropist!

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Again, I’m into history. I found the Qing Dynasty interesting – particular the tensions between the Manchu ruling class and the Han majority. Also, I’m a big fan of Chinese movies (especially martial arts movies) but they never seem to end well when the characters choose love or passion over duty. I wanted to go the opposite direction. (laugh)

There’s a lot of sex in this book but I don’t feel like it’s just gratuitious…ok so maybe some of it is. (laugh) I still like to believe that because our two lovers in this story are so mentally and emotionally scarred that it’s sometimes the only way they can communicate with each other – through physicality.
