What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
The primary character, Jani, of Roses for the Sparrow’ was introduced in ‘Pigeon In a Snare’. In Pigeon, Jani is Lisa Cromwell-Hunt’s assistant and dear friend. After Lisa is kidnapped Jani is instrumental in helping to capture Lisa from Humsler. By the end of Pigeon, however, Lisa was a bit perturbed with Jani’s enthusiasm to just push forward full steam ahead. Jani doesn’t understand Lisa’s need to recooperate. So, after I ended Pigeon, I kept wondering ‘What about Jani?” And so, in Roses for the Sparrow we get to know Jani as intimately as we came to know Lisa in Pigeon in a Snare.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I came across the historical account of Princess Shanyin while googling about Chinese beds. (They’re really amazingly beautiful: http://www.chinancient.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/wed-bed-01.bmp)

I learned Shanyin was a historical princess who was known for having a special bed made so her 30 male concubines could pleasure her all at once. Yet the one tale that survived was about a handsome aristocrat she became fixated on and tried to seduce, yet failed.

Come on…that totally deserves a story, doesn’t it?

Author Bio:
Living on the east coast, I love to travel to Maine. Just far enough away to enjoy time with my wonderful family without the weight of work or competing schedules, but close enough that most of the short time to escape is not taken by travel. The beautiful scenery and abundance of woods and rocky beaches offers peace and tranquility to me and my family. I am the mother of three wonderful children and work in a law firm. Writing is something I never thought I could do, my vast work experience is more in accounting and legal work dealing with figures and asset allocation, but writing became a way to allow my mind to escape for short periods of time while my body stayed anchored to care for two dying parents and ensuring that I could still provide a warm and loving home to my children who agreed to be uprooted to help me care for their grandparents.
Writing for me was born out of the necessity for some peace and relief during a draining and guilt ridden time in my life. My three wonderful children and husband underwent the difficult ordeal of uprooting our lives to care for my parents who were each dying of cancer.
Drastically altering our lives to ensure that the wonderful people who cared for me during childhood and were giving and loving grandparents to their only grandchildren had their family living with them and caring for their daily needs during the three years of their waning lives when cancer ensured they could not take care of themselves, was both rewarding and heart wrenching. The guilt of drastically changing the lives of my children and impairing their freedom led to many a sleepless night and the birth of this series.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I am a nameless, faceless, insignificant cog in a wheel hoping to help someone whose name I do not know, face I have not seen, whose suffering I have not endured, experience light from the touch of a stranger’s friendly efforts to offer a ray of hope that brings a little assistance to their struggling life. Our family has known love, but we have also experienced pain and the need to sacrifice, but nothing like those we hope this will help. Please help us with our effort.
We have all seen the faces of children battling cancer, children starving at home or abroad, soldiers who have come home embattled for their bravery with scars that have secured our freedom, but for which we can never fully comprehend the depths of that cost. We have passed by and sometimes stopped to provide a hopeful word, some money, or a blanket to someone on the streets suffering economic hardship. All of those faces behind names we do not know are individuals who too may feel like cogs in wheels of a machine that need help to flourish and keep moving forward to something that works better than what we have now.
Not having the riches to feed the world or house the homeless, or the comprehension to discover a cure for diseases which ravage the body of those it inhabits and the souls of families who struggle each day alongside them, we are hoping to help in some small way, to make a difference by giving something to get something. In our time of need, we felt the rays of random acts of kindness by medical personnel or home care agents who aided us in our battles. We are hoping to pay the act forward with an act of our own. Yes we have given money, but our ability is not enough to meet the needs of the many, so we are hoping that ours with the little gifts of others can make a difference and touch the lives of people in need. To that end we have composed a series of books, hoping to offer a chuckle, a sigh, a moment of entertainment in exchange for the reader providing a donation to their local hospital that cares for children suffering from cancer, buying an extra can of food while at a grocery store and putting it in a bin designated for food pantries or homeless shelters, sending a donation to a charity assisting our returning soldiers who are injured, or helping us help a local school. The second installment of the book is available free in an electronic library, but is also offered for purchase so that the author can donate from the net proceeds to a local school in hopes that they will use it to provide the future generation with an education that they could not otherwise obtain. Happily we have made our first donation to a very grateful school and will be making another in May.
Help us with this effort. Download the book and donate, pass it on to a friend, every bit counts, or if you are a voice that reaches beyond the few, out to the social network, a voice that when you speak, people listen, tweet this out, post it on your social network page. Take a moment out of your life to assist this cog, who is not knowledgeable in ways of the internet, get the word out and help pay it forward and make the life of someone else more fulfilling, someone whose voice may not be lost in the herds of the masses but may boom and be heard well into the future. If you are willing to help, the book series is Secrets of Sanctuary Hospital with the following subheadings: A Hidden Enclave For Angels, Demons, And Vampires; A Journey Through Hell; Nightmare of The Dark Shadows; Mia’s Dark Encounter, and Final Confrontation (the last is a proposed title). Five books in all, four are already on the net with Smashwords , their affiliates-Itunes, Barnes & Noble and more, and the second book only so far is on Amazon. The other two are coming out as soon as my family and I are through editing them. It is a family affair and my children go to school and I work to earn a living and provide for them, but please, help us if you can bring light to those whose lives face more challenges or difficulties than our own or your own. Help us do a good thing for someone else. I hope this message finds you and yours healthy and fulfilled.

Drowning in the Shallow End by Charlie Mellor

Darker-Amazon-650-x-1009A darkly comic true story about obsessive infatuation, revealing the depths to which people can sink, before they realise they’re in too deep…

For years, all Charlie Mellor wanted was to meet the alluring Pennie Fenton. Unfortunately for him, this wish came true. Captivation with the corrupting Miss Fenton soon developed into an overpowering obsession which sent his life spiralling out of control and jeopardised everything he held dear. It was because of Miss Fenton that he lost touch with his family and friends, got involved with the occult, upset members of the Greek Underworld and even volunteered one of his own fingers to be crushed by a sadistic stranger. Before he could free himself from her curious charms, he would need to acknowledge her real identity and expose the deep, dark secret she had kept hidden from him. Only then, would he find the courage to rebuild himself through a bizarre appearance on national television, where in front of millions of viewers, he would abandon all dignity and reveal the full extent of his downfall.

This candid tale chronicles one man’s epic struggle to free himself from a cruel and manipulative companion. Peppered with black humor, it unveils the damaging impact of an unyielding obsession. Positioned as an offbeat tale of misplaced mesmerisation, the memoir taps into the universal themes of temptation, desire and infatuation. It includes irreverent observations on life, loss and the enormous void between these two. Only at the end of the book do readers see that nothing is quite what it seems and this is in fact, a modern day parable about the redeeming power of love.

Targeted Audience: Adult readers with an interest in darkly obsessive mysteries

Author Bio:
Charlie Mellor was born in Lancashire in the UK, loves spicy fajitas, stand-up comedy and vinyl. A recovering catholic, he now lives in Lincolnshire with his wife and four children. Prior to his current job in training and development, he worked in the publishing industry, designing headlines for regional newspapers.

He would like it known that he no longer sees Pennie Fenton. She is not welcome at his house or in the general proximity of anyone he cares about. Because of her legacy, he has reluctantly been forced to change the names and details of many people in this book – in order to place them outside Pennie Fenton’s circle of influence. While it has taken Charlie until now to build up sufficient courage to admit to others that he knew her well; he can appreciate that many of his friends remain incredibly uncomfortable with such a declaration. He understands that for some, the cost of such a disclosure, would, even in these enlightened times, be far too great.

Can she persevere against the manipulating forces endeavoring to claim her soul to join Andrew in the afterlife, or will the darkness claim its most sought after soul?

Targeted Audience: 20+

Author Bio:
I live in the Boston area, volunteer time at my children’s school while also working at a law firm. This is a brand new experience for me and has been quite educational. I have never been very good with the internet and dealing with formatting and such was quite an experience.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Writing was born out of the necessity for some peace and relief during a draining and guilt ridden time in my life. My three wonderful children and husband underwent the difficult ordeal of uprooting our lives to care for my parents who were both dying of cancer.

Drastically altering our lives to ensure that the wonderful people who cared for me during childhood and were giving and loving grandparents to their only grandchildren had their family living with them and caring for their daily needs during the three years of their waning lives when cancer ensured they could no longer care for themselves was rewarding and heart wrenching. The guilt of drastically changing the lives of my children and impairing their freedom led to many a sleepless night and the birth of this novel.

Despite our trials, as we looked around, we realized for everything we felt, it is nothing compared to parents who are dealing with young children who fight the deadly disease and the siblings who struggle with guilt as they enjoy pleasures that their sibling is sometimes unable to participate in because of their long hospital stays.

The posting of this book for free came about in hopes of starting something good. We have posted the book for free and at the end set forth a note to the reader asking that if they enjoyed the book, they consider donating what they would have paid for the book to a local hospital helping children with cancer, either in their neighborhood or in the Boston area.

The Chosen by Annette Gisby

smallchosenThe neighbouring kingdoms of Oscia and Arcathia have been at a tentative peace for three years after centuries of warfare. Prince Severin of Arcathia has been brought up to put duty before all else and as the only son of the King and Queen, it is his duty to marry and produce an heir. His parents want him to marry an Oscian princess to cement that tentative peace. Unfortunately Severin isn’t interested in princesses. Now, if he had his pick of princes that would be another matter.

Havyn has been a slave all his life. When his aptitude for wizardry is discovered, he finds himself purchased and freed by Prince Severin and apprenticed to the royal wizard, Ildar. His duty is to stay chaste to keep his powers strong, but his feelings for Severin sorely test his resolve.

With kingdoms at war, the throne hanging in the balance, magic in the air, and outside forces trying to keep them apart, can the two men find happiness together, or is duty more important than love?

Targeted Audience: Adult

Author Bio:
Annette Gisby grew up in a small town in Northern Ireland, moving to London when she was seventeen. Being a very small town there were no bookshops and a small library. When she’d devoured every book she could get her hands on in the library, she started writing her own stories so she would always have something to read later.

When not writing she enjoys reading, cinema, theatre, walks along deserted beaches or wandering around ruined castles (great places for inspiration!) New Zealand is her favourite place and she hopes to travel back there one day. She’s a fan of Japanese Manga and Anime and one day hopes to learn Japanese.

She currently lives in Hampshire with her husband, a collection of porcelain dolls and stuffed penguins and enough books to fill a small library. It’s diminishing gradually since the discovery of ebooks but still has a long way to go.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I started writing The Chosen for National Novel Writing Month a few years ago. In my mind I wanted to write a fairy tale for adults set in a fantasy setting. Severin, the prince, came to me rather easily. I could picture what he looked like, what sort of person he was and how he would react to things around him. I had the prince, now all I needed was a princess for him to rescue.

But there was a problem, I couldn’t picture this princess no matter how hard I tried. What was wrong? Why couldn’t I picture this character? As usual, it was my characters who saved me. Severin was insistent that he wasn’t interested in princesses, to rescue or otherwise. Now, if it was princes, that was another matter! In all my character development, I’d failed to realize the fact that my prince was gay!

Well, that certainly put another spin on things and over the next few days, another character came to me: Havyn, who’d been a slave all his life and was certainly in need of rescue. Severin nodded wholeheartedly, for Havyn was a very handsome slave.

Of course, there wouldn’t have been much conflict if all they did was meet and fall in love. But of course, even in a fantasy world being a gay prince wasn’t easy. The kingdom needed heirs, that was Severin’s duty, not to love where he wished. And as for Havyn, he was apprenticed to an old-fashioned wizard after his rescue. A wizard who was of the opinion that remaining chaste was the only way for a wizard to keep his powers. Not to mention the fact that Severin’s father bethrothed him to a princess without his knowledge and his future bride has disappeared…

I loved writing this story, I felt so strongly about all of my characters, even the not so nice ones. When I finished it was as if the friends who had been visiting me had gone home. But they weren’t gone, for I could read about them anytime I wanted. Yes, I do read and re-read my own work, for I write the stories I want to read too.

I hope my readers will find some friends between the pages as well.

Kydona by Thomas Krug

Kydona-Cover-Final-JPGNamed for heaven, the kingdom of Elessia once served as a beacon to the world. Now its name has become a byword for decadence. When Lord Prince Marcus hears the beginnings of a vast conspiracy from the lips of his dying mother, he sets out to uncover the motives lurking behind the war his father waged. With the help of Kaelyn—a sharp-tongued courtesan nursing a long-hidden desire—and Vernon de Gauthier—a near-disturbingly prolific womanizer with a weakness for apples—Marcus slowly unearths the truth: his country lies on the brink of collapse. And soon, the vanquished nation of Kydona will rise to settle a generation-old score.

In Elessia’s debauched court, the threat goes unheeded. Marcus’s romances bloom and just as quickly wither. Blood is shed, lives extinguished. It matters little. Quarrel and murder, lust and love, right and wrong—the lines that separate these are hopelessly blurred in the throes of court intrigue. And the difference between each rests on a knife edge so sharp that even a hero cannot tell them apart.

He put the finishing touches on his first book in Afghanistan, where he served as a junior officer in the United States Army.
