Sunshine: The Author’s Edition by Alyssa Cooper

cover-2-girl2
When ozone levels plummeted, the world changed. There’s no going back.

This is a world where sunshine can kill. Where there are heavy steel shutters on every window, and underground tunnels for safe passage. Where citizens nourish themselves with synthetic vitamins and rationed food, living a life in darkness, never seeing the sun.

This is the only world that eighteen-year-old Manda has ever known. As this strong, passionate girl struggles to bloom in a hard and unforgiving world, she finds a single comfort; Jordy, a man who delicately shows her how beautiful life can be. But then the letter comes.

Everything is changing, all over again.

Manda will soon be evacuated from her home, transported across the country to a place where the days are shorter, where it still rains, where the sun is less deadly. There’s only one catch; Jordy may not be going with her.

She bides in agony, fighting to fit as much living into her last few weeks as she can, while she waits to learn if she will soon lose the only man she’s ever loved.

Targeted Audience: Adult

Author Bio:
Alyssa Cooper is a Canadian writer with a graphic design diploma and a passion for story telling. She collects old books and antique typewriters, and has a preference for the darker side of fiction.
After her first full-length publication in 2012, Alyssa spent two years working with traditional publishers, releasing two novels, two short stories, and one poetry collection in just over two years. In 2014, Alyssa decided to make the move into independent publishing, and has since released three short stories and a full length collection.

“I’ve always had a fascination with the darker side of life. With monsters, and shadows, and the things that go bump in the night. I’ve also always had a bit of a preoccupation with death – which may not be strictly healthy, but has always been a wonderful inspiration.

When I was four years old I stumbled down the stairs to find my dad watching Aliens – and for some reason, he let me stay up and watch it with him. Needless to say, I’ve been hooked on horror ever since, and Ripley will always be my hero.

Stories like the Alien trilogy had a serious influence on my writing style. The monsters were terrifying, but it was the humans who were interesting; they were real characters, not just props. Ripley was a strong-female-character before the strong-female-character existed, and yet she cries, she sings, she mothers first Jonesy and then Newt and then an entire crew of criminals. She was so real, so human, even in the face of complete chaos.

These are the stories I want to tell. I want to find the humanity – or lack there of – in everything.”

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Honestly, sometimes I feel like Sunshine wrote itself.

The concept is inspired by the environmental changes we’ve all been facing for years now, of course; the idea that some day our short-sighted actions could rob us of our beautiful sun. But the love story, the real heart of this book, was the story that truly needed to be told. And I think it was Amanda, a fictional character, that really inspired it.

My first outline for Sunshine had the story end with Manda’s suicide. And then I wrote the character, and she laughed in my face. She said, “I’d never do that, and you KNOW it.”

So, I was forced to write her a new story instead.

Targeted Audience: 16+

Author Bio:
Shawn Hilton I joined the U.S. Army young and began writing as a way to entertain my mind. My stories have romance in some form or another (Even when it is a lunatic Vampire who thinks sleeping in his victim’s blood is enjoyable.). I like my characters to have a thread of reality to them. Maybe their actions are fantastic and can stretch the imagination, their personalities, their reasons for their anger or other emotions all have to feel real to me. I was born in Washington D.C. but was raised all through the states of Maryland and Virgnia. I have lived in Germany and Egypt. I have traveled through Europe and I look forward to more for both research and pleasure. I currently live in Germany where I am close to my three children who always with out fail are close to my heart. I have worked as a soldier, a paramedic, and nurse. I have worked in a warehouse as a everything from stock boy, to floor manager, and I try to bring that feel of harsh reality and life lived into everything I write.

Toni Force I have always enjoyed reading a variety of genres as long as the story is good. Romances however, have always been my favorites followed closely by fantasy or paranormal stories. Combine the two elements and I will re-read a story. I hope the stories I write will encourage the readers to re-read the story just because they enjoyed the ride the first time. I currently live in Michigan with my husband and two children.
